Ami M. Shah, MPH, is a dedicated public health professional with extensive experience in addressing health disparities, integrating community health workers into care teams, and using data to inform health policies and initiatives. She is known for her data-driven approach to advancing public health programs and her ability to galvanize communities for improved health outcomes. Her career has spanned roles in the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, and the Sinai Urban Health Institute, focusing on high-risk populations and health equity.
In January 2015, Ami joined the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services as a consultant to launch the Care Connections Program, which integrated Community Health Workers (CHW) into primary care practices to support high-risk patients. She was responsible for hiring, training, and managing 25 CHWs across six sites and facilitated their transition to clinical care management teams at the facility level. Before this role, Ami worked at the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, where she produced health profiles for various regions and informed local health policies through an equity lens. Her efforts led to the creation of small area estimates for local cities and the development of the California Health Interview Survey Neighborhood Edition.
Earlier in her career, Ami spent nearly a decade as a social epidemiologist with the Sinai Urban Health Institute, focusing on health disparities. In 2002, she coordinated a major health survey in Chicago, revealing significant health inequities and leading to over $17 million in new health initiatives. Ami collaborated with community leaders and researchers to address health disparities and published several articles and a book on her findings. She holds degrees from the University of Chicago, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, and a Certificate in Gerontology from the University of Southern California. Ami’s career has been driven by her passion for using data to advance public health programs and galvanize communities for improved health outcomes.
