Statement from the South Asian Public Health Association on the Recent Shooting at a Mosque in San Diego

The South Asian Public Health Association (SAPHA) is deeply saddened by the horrific shooting last week at the Islamic Center of San Diego, and the impact acts of violence continue to have on Muslim communities across the country.

Violence targeting spaces of worship affects not only physical safety, but also the mental health, well-being, and sense of belonging of entire communities. Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate have long shaped the experiences of many Muslim, South Asian, Arab, Sikh, and immigrant communities in the United States, contributing to fear, trauma, discrimination, and violence. Harmful rhetoric and the normalization of hate further deepen these impacts and threaten the safety and dignity of our communities.

At SAPHA, we recognize hate, discrimination, and violence as public health issues with profound and lasting consequences for individuals and communities alike. Experiences of Islamophobia, racism, xenophobia, and targeted violence can contribute to chronic stress, trauma, anxiety, social isolation, and broader mental and physical health inequities that affect entire communities. As highlighted in SAPHA’s previous work on the health implications of racialized state violence, these harms extend beyond isolated incidents and shape communities’ sense of safety, belonging, and trust. We stand in solidarity with those impacted and reaffirm our commitment to advancing communities where all people can live, worship, and gather safely and with dignity.

We encourage those who are able to support community-led efforts assisting individuals and families impacted by this tragedy. The Islamic Center of San Diego has established an official victim and community support fund to help provide direct assistance and recovery support during this difficult time.

We continue to hold the impacted families, worshippers, and broader community in our thoughts during this difficult time.
